Everyone likes a mirror, while not knowing the true nature of his face. After all, how long does a reflection remain in view? Make a practice of contemplating the origin of the reflection. This cheek and mole go back to the source thereof.

Do you know your daily calcium needs? I never really gave this much thought until recently, maybe because there's been so many campaigns on the appropriate calcium in take lately.[we have campaigns to smile more, to be kind,to have more babies,  to speak our mother tongue etc...we are a city of campaigns;P]

My bones ache, whenever it gets cold, or when I am in an air conditioned room, thats when it occured to me that my lack of calcium must be contributing to this.

When I looked at the list of food that are good sources of calcium I just got even more worried. Most of the natural sources come from milk. *sigh* If you looked at the other listed food items, then eating now seems to be a daunting task.

I am not keen on trying supplements. I dont pop pills and I dont know if I could ever bring myself to develop a habit now.

When I think about the food that I normally take everyday, I seriously doubt if there is even any signifcant amount of calcium in my system.

I suppose sardines are an option. I must bring myself to drink chocolate milk, no matter how much it makes me want to puke after every glass. Thats a pain.:S Ice-cream helps, but not much. I can't imagine consuming 10 cups of ice-cream everyday.

What do you do to ensure you have enough calcium in your diet? *besides the obvious -- milk*

Isn't lactose free milk an option? Also, there is a granulate on the market, so you don't have to pop pills. I'm taking this granulate [or micro pearls] to balance magnesium lack and sometimes iron and zinc.

also, bananas are a valuable source for calcium. I wouldn't say sardines are a good source for calcium, but rather for essential fats [which are important too]. Spinach is another good source.

10 cups of ice cream would damage health more than do good with calcium - too much sugar :P

But mostly, we should never forget that these campaigns serve two purposes - to boost a weak economy [milk, anyone??] and to address those who are by far not eating healthy [which, ironeously, are mostly underpriviliged people with no extra money to spend!].

I eat lots of cereal, so that's how I get most of my milk. I also love cheese. I eat yogurt a couple times a week just because I like it. Broccoli and salmon have lots of calcium - and we both adore broccoli, so we eat that about once a week. And I love salmon - I probably have that once a week too.

But there are also these chocoalte things in the US called Viactiv - they're tiny little chocoate bites that are loaded down with calcium. Just by popping one a day you get most or all (I can't remeber) of your calcium.

Hope that helps?

Yeah you can find chocolate chews in singapore that have calcium in them but now, it's not just calcium that we need to have to prevent osteoporosis - you need zinc and other minerals like anissa mentions.

i drink some milk - yoghurt is a good source of calcium if you are lactose intolerant. cheese is good too. how about tofu? that's good too. and dried beans cooked up. definitely get sun - vit D helps the absorption of calcium.

Just to note, Spinach contains calcium but your body cannot break down and absorb most of the calcium. (http://www.nationaldairycouncil.org/nutrition/nutrients/Cal4w.pdf)
Apparently, you'd need 8 cups of spinach to get the same amount of calcium as you could get from a glass of milk.

Someone suggested Tofu, what about Soya milk? There's a variety of soya products out there. Honey roasted soya nuts have become my favourite snack right now, but I'm not sure about their Ca content.

i like their suggestion for Ca fortified Orange Juice. That's not too hard to find, is it?

Yogurt is good, try making a smoothie with it. It might taste better that way.

or eat cereal with yogurt instead of milk. (i use yogurt as my substitute for ice cream when i'm feeling guilty about all that sugar)
